British survey: Religious people often less prudish than thought

A YouGov survey of 4,437 British citizens on the topic of “Religion and Guilty Behavior” has found that while religious people are more likely to feel guilty than others, they are not necessarily more prejudiced against sex. According to the study by Linda Woodhead, a sociologist of religion at Lancaster University, Baptists, Muslims and members of the Pentecostal movement are the most likely to feel guilty. Only 16 percent of all religionists condemn premarital sex, but 33 percent condemn pornography arousal. Surprisingly, although the popes have long railed against contraceptives, only 12 percent of those who practice have anything against protection during sex. It made a big difference in the survey whether respondents were male or female. Atheist men feel almost no guilt, but religious women feel even more. 40 percent of men think sex is important for a fulfilled life – this is shared by only 20 percent of women.
